With the rise of MTL and Nic Salts low powered mods are coming back on the scene and Cthulhu has an offering that is hard to ignore based on the design and the price point. The Cthulhu Tube Mod has a high end flair and form factor that grabs notice. We were interested the second we saw it, and then a big problem dropped…
Todd of Todds Reviews called out pretty quickly that there was a design flaw in the 510 positive contact and how it was executed and attached to the Mosfet board. We of course already had ours in hand an ironically had trouble with ours just as he described. We heard of even bigger issues with auto firing but didn’t witness any of those behaviours.
The great news is the team over at Cthulhu sprung into action and quickly fixed the contact issues and coated the whole circuit board. Replacements for the board were also made available for free at the retailer you bought your original unit from. So with the trouble aside, and if you can get past the launch jitters, lets talk about this solid little mod.
Right from the first look it has a high end appeal. The solid stainless construction, simple lines, discreet firing button, short (18350) and long (18650) modes, Mosfet protection, all contribute to a mech that checks off a lot of boxes. Everything seems too good to be true and then you see the ridiculous logo. Seriously, what were they thinking? Look on the packaging, there is a modern Cthulhu Mods logo that was done recently and looks awesome. Why would anyone think that a logo that looks like a cartoon or piece of clip art of an octopus more than a Cthulhu would be a good way to go? In our opinion it seriously damages the aesthetic of the mod. That aside this is a clean looking mod, we wish the center sections didn’t have beveled edges so there was a more seamless look with the top and bottom caps but that is livable. The button is a joy to use, super clicky and solid. The threads a buttery smooth and the bottom cap anti-rattle mechanism works great. There is a nice weight to the mod, it feels very solid, again very high end. Even the packaging is very tasteful and well done (still can’t get over that logo choice, was it a mistake?).
Conductivity is quick and snappy. We love to rock an MTL RTA with a 0.5-0.75 Ohm build for a nice warm and battery life friendly vape. We find ourselves in 18350 mode for the size convenience. We haven’t really used the 18650 mode at all. We have been able to get through the day with 2 batteries. Since the release of the new Mosfet we haven’t experienced any trouble with the 510. The small silicon nib under the 510 tab seems to be doing the job.
Fit & Finish is impressive for the price point and production scale. We have always believed it was possible to mass produce quality high end products, and this is a great example of that theory. We have noticed a high level of durability with no major scratches or wear forming during pretty regular use. Also after a couple of months of ownership we don’t see the start of any tarnishing as of yet.
At less than $40 for a mod of this caliber it’s hard to ignore. The solid feel, performance, and size factor (18350 mode) make it a mod we love to keep in our arsenal. Throw on a Kayfun [Lite] or a Hussar Project X RTA and you have a rather elegant evening out vape setup. It comes down to trusting the new Mosfet (it’s been find for us) and if you can live with a tiny cartoon octopus. But it sure is a great little mod.
