Geekvape has done well with the Aegis line of mods and for good reason. They are somewhat affordable and extremely durable (to a degree). The aesthetic might not be for everyone, but it sure is a recognizable silhouette. They launched a mini internal battery version late in 2018 and we thought we should check it out.
In every way this is a mini version of its big brother. It’s like it was put in a shrinking machine. The form factor is one of the biggest draws. This is a tiny 80W mod with a great ergonomic hand feel. Some may swerve clear of an internal battery setup but hand tight. The overall aesthetics are identical as well and very polarizing. For us, it’s a trying a little too hard and has too much going on with all the different textures, materials, and contours. But it does feel good to hold. The large amount of silicon wrapping that not only acts as the shock protection also feels nice to hold. We just wish there was a colour way that was all murdered out in a simple black (no red or any colour stitching). The Shiny front panel is a finger print magnet and like the original Aegis it’s prone to scratching and the tint on it makes the screen dimmer than it should be (hard to see outside in bright light). The buttons are a highlight, both with an awesome clicking feel and sound (almost as good as a HexOhm). From a design perspective it really comes down to if the looks and some odd scratches over time will get to you. As a daily beater it may be perfect.
The chipset is nothing crazy. It has all the features you want and don’t need (temp control). We have noticed it’s accurate and pretty instantaneous on firing. The amount of info on screen is another big highlight, having a a live reading of your Ohms and Voltage is a nice touch. Amperage is nice to see to help you learn more about Ohms law too (however with an internal battery and included protections it doesn’t serve a lot of purpose). But we can’t fault anything here in the chipset.
Battery life is what you make it. If you keep your ohms down and aren’t chain vaping you can get a solid day out the Aegis Mini no problem. The good news is if you want to rock a fat sub ohm tank you can, the 510 will easily handle up to a 28mm and you can quick charge the little guy with built in 2 amp charging (Geekvape claims an 80% in 30 mins). 2200 mAh does just fine really, sure 3000 or more would be nice, but it is what it is.
So where are we at? It comes down to how you feel about the Aegis Mini. If the looks work for you and you need a durable mod, it’s a solid choice. There is something about the price point for us, sure $70 (CDN) is not crazy but for a mass produced mod it just seems a little high. We can’t live with a screen that scratches or dims the display, and frankly if Geekvape is touting this as a durable mod, why don’t we see some Gorilla Glass here? Okay, but all this aside it is a tiny, powerful little mod that hits fast and accurately. With all the mini mods hitting the market it will be interest to see how the Aegis holds up. Vape on!
