Sqonking is coming back strong with plenty of new and classic mods available on the market. Squonking was very popular about 4-5 years ago and has a strong loyal following that is growing everyday. Basically Squonking gives you the flavour of dripping with the juice capacity of a tank while being more convenient because you don’t need to pull out a bottle to drip. Your juice is delivered to your coils/wicks via a hole through your 510 connection (otherwise known as a Bottom Feed pin) and you squeeze a bottle inside your mod to push the juice up (when you release the bottle it removes any excess juice, leaving your coils perfectly juiced up). Lost Vape has been killing it lately with some pretty awesome DNA75, 133, and 200 mods. Their Efusion line has been a popular choice since the introduction of their DNA40 version last year. So when they released the Halcyon Squonker (which is basically a repurposed EFusion DNA200 with a 900 mAh battery instead of the larger 1300 mAh to make room for the squonk bottle) we had to give one a try.
Like most DNA200 LiPo mods the Halcyon has a nice light weight that is even lighter than you would expect thanks to the billet aluminum casing. We chose the black anodized colour way and it has held up great with heavy use, our only gripe is it’s a major finger print magnet (beware OCDs, grab any other colour but black). The overall design is pretty clean and well thought out, the placement of the finger or squonk hole is great (works well and feels natural in which ever hand you use) and has a nice beveled edge to it. The buttons are rounded/domed vs the more square style you see in their other EFusion models and they feel great and don’t have an ounce of rattle.
It’s an Evolve DNA200 chipset, it’s awesome as to be expected, still our favourite (it’s all about the refinement feature/functionality). Battery life is pretty average for a 900 mAh liPo, as long as you stay in around 50-60W you can expect a decent amount of vaping per charge (4-8hrs). The battery door is a pleasure to use, it has a ball bearing that keeps it locked in place and the door doubles as the access to your squonk bottle for refilling. Everything is in there pretty tight but you can get the bottle in and out without too much trouble. As with all regulated squonk mods you need to be careful with any juice leakage as it could short out your chipset. Their is a little gap below where the bottle rests and it is a little concerning to see exposed battery cables, but we haven’t experienced a single sign of concern, the included bottle doesn’t leak a bit.
The bottle is a little stiff when compared to the super soft, easy to squeeze bottles that most of the industry now uses. The good news is the Italian 8.5ml bottles fit very nicely and we have included a link for where you can pick some up. That is one con, you only get 1 bottle with the mod, you can get 2 more if you buy the Lost Vape Malstrom RDA separately, but it’s not the best squonking atty out there. As for attys we have been enjoying on the Halcyon, The Hobo Drifter, Hobo 3.1, Cthulhu Mod Hastur v2, and the Norbert Origen Little.
The Carbon Fiber side panel finish wasn’t for us, just too reflective. Zapwrapz out of the UK has some great wrap options, the last pic in the gallery is their Walnut finish, we used just the side panel wraps and our quite happy with the higher end look it gives the mod.
Squonking is something every vaper needs to try. If you find yourself preferring the flavour and vape out of an RDA more than a Tank (Clearo, RTA, RDTA, etc…) than you are probably a perfect candidate. The Lost Vape Halcyon is a great way to get into it while still enjoying the rock solid experience and control that the DNA200 offers. And it’s not hard to find, many of the more popular squonk options are mechanical and/or high end and hard to find and/or afford. Sure it’s a little wide in the hand, but the weight and features balance it out. Lost Vape has also just released a squonk version of their DNA75 Therion mod (again removing one 18650 to make room for the squonk bottle, pretty smart) that might be another solid option to consider (battery life will be less than the Halcyon but it is replaceable). Either way Lost Vape is killing it.
