This was going to be a simple of review of the new Hobo Customs DrifTank and it still will be. But before we get to it, we would like to take a second and honour the Company and the Man, Hoberto Serrano. Yesterday he announced that Hobo Customs is no more, it’s a loss for the industry and for Flavourchasers everywhere. Hoberto is a mad genius when it comes to the products he has designed/released, each being great and each being better than the one before. We couldn’t imagine our vapelife without at least one of his amazing products. We will cherish what we have for a long time to come.
So the DrifTank, it’s a great last hoorah to an incredible stable of products from Hobo Customs. This is an RDTA like no other…
There was a couple of versions of this atty before it was released. At first it looked more like the fourth generation Hobo RDA (The Drifter) and the same atty it takes its name sake from, but it was a last minute revision that made it harken back to the original Hobo RDA. That signature top cap with design lines that remind us of a hindu temple, it’s fitting because there is a calibre of vape inside that should be worshiped. Everything about this design screams countless hours of perfecting the perfect tolerances, just the right juice channels, a chamber reducer that is pure magic, and a build deck that is a cinch to work with. The finish and materials are perfect, everything functions as it should. Really there is no downfall or cons to this atty, maybe the only one is that there were only 350 made.
Flavour is rich and full and brings out many subtleties in almost any juice you throw in it. The chamber is small and even small in single coil with the reducer in place, this of course part of the equation. The other part is the ramped airflow, but just as we would expect from Hoberto, he didn’t or couldn’t leave it alone and adopt the same design from the Drifter RDA. Instead there is now a flat section and a taper to the ramp, this seems to increase velocity and smooth out the already great airflow design. Also this flat section keep things a lot cleaner with less condensation escaping from the AFC slots. Airflow is silky smooth and the DrifTank loves long drawn out inhales. We played a lot before getting down to this review and single coil mode is by far the best flavour, sure it does great in dual mode but it just doesn’t give you the same richness.
Building is super simple and again there are improvements over the Drifter deck. Gone are the negative clamps (which we really like, but some don’t) and in their place are some big flat head screws. Clamping down your leads is a piece of cake, and getting you coil aligned correctly is pretty easy too. You basically want your coil sitting 1mm above the airflow ramp with its tip aimed at the center of you coil (right in the middle of the bottom). It’s amazing you can put almost any build in here and it will taste good. This is an extremely forgiving atty. But if we had to choose a nice 3mm, 5 wrap, 26/36 N80/KA1 Clapton coming in at 0.6 Ohms and run at 30-35W does it for us. This tank likes power, nothing crazy, but it does like being in around 4.3-5V. With the above build its a warm vape for sure, but like we mentioned you can build this anyway you like and get the temp you are looking for and get great performance.
Filling is easy thanks to the easy fill port on one of the airflow ramps. It is possible to fill with a standard dropper but is much easier and less messy when done with a unicorn bottle. This tank never leaks, we have had a little mess with filling caused by a vacuum, it’s best to slide something down the side of the juice ports now and then to keep the air moving through the tank. This RDTA wicks like no other, there is an interest design to the juice ports, it’s a shape we haven’t seen before. Setting your wicks is very easy thanks to the large size of these juice ports. We find it best to set the length to just poke out past the bottom of the metal section of the deck. Let the tipping action of regular use do the rest of the job, this keep your coils very saturated and keeps that kick ass flavour rolling.
With the news yesterday (October 24, 2016) we hope that prices don’t skyrocket on Hobo products. We have a feeling they will. It doesn’t help that there are only 350 of these babies in the wild. But if you can get your hands on one, this is one atty that won’t be leaving your collection. The DrifTank is a work of art, a final masterpiece from one of the savants of the vaping world. We will miss you Hoberto Serrano (Hobo Customs).
Hi, does the juice fill hole leak juice if tilted on its side? Thanks.
Hey Henry,
It shouldn’t, there is a bit of a vaccum effect. But then again you should never tilt an RDTA.
Sorry, I meant tilted when you vape, not resting on its side. BTW, great work on your review articles. Very detailed. Cheers.
Hey,
Not at all. We prefer a single coil build so you need the fill port on the coil side to fill. No leaking of any sort.
Hi, with an RDTA will i have to keep dripping juice every couple hits or will the tank do it for me?, cheers
Hey Nathan,
They have a tank you fill with juice that lasts much longer than a standard RDA (dripper).
very very spit back RDA. How to get rid of Spit back?

Sorry Danson that you are having trouble.. it has to be your coil position or amount of wicking. We never get any spit back of any sort. Please follow my recommend build and look at the pics for placement. That really is all we can do to help without more info. Good luck
