Meet the second revision or the evolved (EVO) version of the Ashura RDTA by Divine Mods (a collab between modders from Japan and the Philippines). It is a very different atty from it’s predecessor, let see how it vapes…
The last version was a more traditional single coil RDTA design with a center mounted coil with an offset juice port, and top airflow. The EVO is a much shorter and more refined design. Still a single coil atty but with the posts and coil set off to one side and a bottom Kennedy style airflow design. The juice port is now acting as a chamber reducer (somewhat, could reduce the chamber more) and sports a fill screw on top (lack knurling and the threads and screw quality are subpar for this price point, needing a screwdriver to be used). There is a lot of unused space inside the chamber, flavour is good but would be better if this was somehow addressed. The aesthetic is definitely unique, especially when sporting the bubble style tank (similar to the first Ashura styling). There is a flat slightly less capacity (0.2ml less) tank section included too and both tanks are Ultem (nice touch).
It’s a nice looking tank, has a high end appeal for sure. The wicking ports are a little tight (small) and seems to be on trend lately, getting smooth, quick wicking is challenging. There seems to be a lot of effort placed on making this RDTA not leak, there is a time to listen to feedback and then there are times when it’s ridiculous. RDTA are never going to be leak proof if you set them on their side they will leak like mad. The fill port screw and small wicking ports are over kill and hinder performance. We find running the atty without the fill screw creates better flow (with it you can run into vacuum issues, especially when squonking).
Flavour is pretty good, a tad anemic thanks to the slow wicking. If only those juice ports where 0.5mm larger. Even with a 2.5mm ID coil and a gene style tilt on inhale you can’t get that slight dryness to go away. And the inner chamber has a ton of unused space that has to also play a roll in muting the flavour. Basically the flavour could be better with some minor revisions.
Airflow is slightly turbulent and on the noisy side. No whistling but loud enough to make you self-conscious in certain environments. Closed down 1/2 way makes for more flavour intensity, slightly quieter, and less turbulent.
Building is not bad, on the easy side. The posts are set pretty far apart which makes setting you coil leads a bit of a deal, nothing crazy, but it’s an issue. You don’t want your coil to be much wider than the airflow slot so bending your wire leads on a 30º angle helps get them out of the way to make room for your wick leads. The flat head post screws are definitely not our favourite but they function well and seem to be a hardened metal. We like a 6 wrap, spaced, 2.5mm ID, 26awg, 0.7 ohm coil at around 25W. With short wick leads (barely inside the juice ports) and tilting the atty with the AFC hole towards your mouth you can get a nice, sort of warm vape. Make sure to lose the fill port screw too, makes a big difference on wicking.
These condensed RDTAs are cool and the form factor is nice, but 2ml of capacity makes for a pretty frequent refill schedule. Maybe a little longer than a deep welled RDA, double the time between refills if you are lucky. Guess it’s up to you, we find the EVO a little messy when you pop the top cap (lots of condensation). Squonking with the included BF pin is alright, but like a lot of these BF RDTAs, they have vacuum issues and the squonk bottle takes back a lot of what it puts in, so you are better off in tank mode than BF mode. Which leans on the side that a larger juice capacity would be nice.
We didn’t have the pleasure of reviewing the Ashura so we can’t really compare the performance against this newer version. That said we can weigh in on what we think of it as a stand alone version. It’s expensive, somewhat hard to get (Facebook lists), and performs reasonably well. The hype around the high end market seems to be over promising lately, we are a fan of high end when they out perform and are built of the finest materials but this is simply an overpriced atty with a lot of hype.
