528 Customs the company known for modifying Kayfuns to make them more subohm friendly has branched out and designed and produced their very first RDA, the Goon. And a Goon it is, it’s a 24mm beast of an RDA that is definitely more for the cloudchaser but offers surprisingly great flavour that could interest the most discerning flavourchasers.
Quality, we are extremely impressed with the fit, finish, and materials, the Goon is much higher quality than the price they’re asking for. Beautiful brushed stainless steel, with deep crispy tasteful laser etching, perfect o-ring tolerances, and a drip tip with premium mouth feel are just some of the qualities that make this atty great. The Goon comes packaged in a rather dope velvet bag with embroidered branding in a colour to match the atty finish (Black, SS, Copper, or Brass), it’s a really nice touch. The overall aesthetic is nice and clean, simple really, even the AFC looks pretty traditional, but it’s all the details that add up to make this a special little atty (Concave/Ogee Beveled top cap edge, Protruding/Adjustable Copper 510 pin, Beveled Center Barrel Edges, Internal O-ring Drip Tip Connection, etc…). And there is even some pretty serious innovation as well, the ‘Bridge Post’ and Clamp system is a pleasure to use, not only is it easy, it can handle anything you throw at it (from thin to thick as hell wire leads).
Flavour, it’s there, sure for the way we vape you need to shut down the AFC quite a bit, and use a build that doesn’t use nearly any of this atty’s potential. But it’s great. Beautiful on top of any box mod with functionality that makes it a pleasure to vape.
The Goon is a cloud monster, even with a flavourchasing build you can quickly cloud up a room. 528 Customs has nailed the air to coil ratio and it just produces thick voluminous vapor.
AFC may look simple, but the tolerances or space between the 3 air ports on each side is where the magic lies. It allows for some great settings, we alternated between 2/3 of 1 air port and 1 1/2 airports that get partially blocked by the space between the first and second air ports (this creates some awesome restriction on the draw). It’s surprising the level of restricted draw you can dial in on this rather large atty (24mm).
We played around a lot with builds, the one pictured above is a crazy fused clapton that ohms rather low for flavourchasing at 0.2 ohms. It’s too hot for us, but the atty loved it, clouds and flavour for days. The build we have settled down with is a dual, 2.5mm, 26/32 simple clapton wire, 6 wrap, coming in at 0.45 Ohms and we run it in around 60W. This is a perfect, slightly warm vape with plenty of flavour. The Goon also does single builds very nicely, and a fused clapton in around 0.4-0.5 does well. The ‘Bridge Post’ design is a dream to work with, simply loosen the screws and push your leads in between the clamps, the best part is the weight of the clamps help hold your coils in place as you build. One note, it’s best to pre-trim your leads to length as it’s hard to trim them after they are secured.
The Juice well is massive as to be expected by the size, 25+ drops and the resistance on the drip tip is perfect for pulling the top cap. The one possible con is the drip tip, it’s a 14mm wide boar, and so there is no ability to use a standard 510 tip. The Goon will take all the crazy cool Kennedy custom drip tips though, so you can still add your own style if you want.
The Goon wasn’t an atty we thought we would like, it’s the old judge a book by it’s cover thing, but it’s beautifully crafted and performs very well. This might just be the atty that caters to both cloudchaser and flavourchaser. It’s a good atty to pick up if you’re curious about each style of vaping, you can easily set a build for either. The value is pretty good, $60 for this level of quality seems more than fair and it’s built to last. Now if 528 Customs could make a strictly flavourchasing atty we would be very interested in seeing what they came up with. If you’re looking for a new RDA you should definitely put the Goon on your list.
Sir, can u help me how to build with normal wire kanthal or ni80 for flavour?
Hey Aan,
The wire doesn’t affect flavour that much (between the two you have mentioned). It comes down to the gauge and build. We suggest a 22-24awg, spaced, 3mm, dual coil setup. Aim for 0.25-0.5 ohms. Vape on!
This is the best rda around to date. I just received mine and can’t wait to try it out. The guy at the vape shop said that it a the best. I only want the best. I wouldn’t buy it if it’s not the best cause I like buying things that are the best.
I just got one a week ago and run mine with dual coil 26ga Kanthal A1, 6/7 Wrap and get about 0.38 Ohms.
I wrap mine at 2.5mm and the flavor is amazing. I find it is great at 40-50 watts with all 3 air flows open running parallel with the coils. I’ve tried 28ga X2 clapton builds on this but its not as good to me. A little harsh. This is the best rda I have used. Very happy with it.
