We were fans of the first Hastur RDA and didn’t see much wrong with it. But Cthulhu Mods heard all of us and made some pretty big improvements to an already great and much under-rated RDA. We will skip to the chase, this is a must buy atty. Read this if you like – or just go grab one!
The original had some issues, it had top airflow slots that didn’t allow you to blow on your coils before inhaling without possibly burning your lips. It had a big logo on the side, a pretty tight 4 post build deck, and some complained of spit back. Well Cthulhu addressed everything, and they did it well. The new velocity build deck, side airflow slots, a drip tip with spit back protection, and no outer markings are the big highlights here. Cthulhu has gone a step further and stepped up the production quality too, the fit and finish is very good and this new version is much lighter than the original. With this new cleaner aesthetic it’s right at home on any mod (including high end shit.)
The flavour was good on the original, and it’s still just as good. Thanks to the inner sleeve design, the cyclonic airflow still performs it’s magic along with the help of a rather condensed vapor chamber. The airflow hits the coils from underneath and cycles up to your mouth.
The new spitback drip tip adds a nice wooshiness to the flow that makes each pull rather satisfying. It does however gather condensation over time that makes it a little messy if you’re not careful on redrip. This excess juice doesn’t find it’s way to your mouth so it’s nothing serious and if it pisses you off you can always use the drip tip adapter with your own tip of choice.
The new air slot position on the sides of the atty work perfectly and now allow for a little blow through to get your coils running. The AFC is very versatile and can give you a lot of draw options, from so open a CloudChaser may like it, to a nice flavourful restricted draw. We tend to run it only a 1/4 open on the right side of the angled inner sleeve (this gives the best restriction in our opinion, which side you open makes a difference). We have heard complaints about the inner sleeve moving when adjusting the outer sleeve/AFC, we haven’t had this issue at all. Once you build and get it set up don’t remove the outer sleeve ’til you go for a cotton change or a rebuild, with the rather large top opening there is on reason to remove it to drip (this should guarantee no inner movement).
Building is as you would expect with a velocity styled deck, a piece of cake. Cthulhu has everything aligned perfectly. Drop in your coils, center them vertically between the two holes on each post and you’re good. This new deck is much more spacious than the last, but a max of 2.5mm coils is still what we recommend to make sure you have enough clearance for the inner sleeve. Our favourite build is a 2.5mm, dual, 24awg Kanthal, spaced 6 wrap, coming in at 0.25 Ohms. We run it between 60-66W and get a super flavourful, warm vape.
Less wick is a good thing, we find having your wick tails just hitting the deck gives the best results. We are amazed at how dialled in this atty is, you can taste you coil going dry very accurately. You can basically run it right to dry without working about a shitty hit. It may be that we only run DNA 200s pretty much these days but it’s surprising.
Holy juice capacity! For such a small dripper you wouldn’t think you can get over 25 drops in this baby. It makes for a great out and about atty, you can get quite a few hauls between drips! One thing, don’t over drip, it’s a short atty with tremendous airflow pressure, it will suck juice right into your mouth. Drip till you just start to see juice filling the center of the deck and you should be good (as long as you’re not a hoover with your draws).
This is an awesome atty! It’s simple to build with great design thinking and execution as a price you just can’t ignore. Oh yeah, and it performs like a dream, killer flavour and airflow with a look that rivals any high end atty. Simply, it’s a no brainer, buy one right now! Promise you won’t regret it one bit.
Please start clearly labeling tanks and drippers as either mouth to lung or direct to lung. It would be really great if you did. Cheers 🙂
I think it must be said that cutting off the spit guard with a pair of snips improves the flavor tenfold and I don’t notice spit back. None.
