It’s no surprise that we are fans of Wotofo’s designs/products and we were excited to get our hands on the Serpent BF RDA. We have taken the time with this one, not because it’s complicated, more that it has some unique design thinking and we wanted to live with it for a bit. Lets get into it…
Aesthetically it’s a little busy, there is a U logo/icon with a swoosh or water symbol through it, not sure what this is all about. Then there are these two rings of dots on the top cap and finally the stepped silhouette caused by the catch cup design. We have to hand it to Wotofo for trying something new, the idea of a leakproof RDA is a good one. However, the usability of this deck within a cup execution has it limitations and problems. It complicates the building and rewicking procedure with the fact that you need to dry burn, build, and set your wick on the deck unit separately and then carefully place it into the catch cup. Then there is getting it all aligned and tight on your mod before popping on the top cap. A lot of shit right? Add in trouble with not enough surface area to get a grip on the top cap for adjustments or popping off and you start to think why? A lot of trouble for making it leak proof. We don’t think leaking RDAs is even a major issue, especially in the BF/Squonking side of vaping.
Flavour is were the Serpent BF starts to make more sense. The top cap fitting into the catch cup helps condense the vapor chamber to improve the density and intensity of the vapor. Then there is an included SCR (single coil reducer) that helps condense things even further with single coil builds. It’s good flavour, not incredible, but really solid.
Airflow can be pretty dialled in once you get your hands on that elusive AFC/top cap. In dual mod you can get pretty airy and in single with the SCR installed you can get nice and tight. Like most attys, about half open is where we like it for a flavourful restricted draw. A secret to the Serpent BF is to set it up nice and dry and never open the top cap until you need a wick change. This will make taking it on and off for juice refills a more pleasant experience (less to no internal spinning, other wise you will need to realign the inner deck with the AFC every time).
The build deck is pretty simple, a 4 clamp design. Works great for a single builds (just use the two inner clamps) and gets a little annoying for dual because you need to stretch out a lead on each coil to reach the outer clamps. It’s hard to say what’s better, single or dual. For single we like 6 wrap, 2.5mm, 28/36 Clapton at around 0.5 ohms, and for dual a simple 2.5-3mm, spaced, 24 awg, 5 wrap, at around 0.25 ohms. Both are really good, and the flavour is pretty similar. We run our Serpent BF on mech squonkers and find the overall performance pretty good with either build.
Juice capacity or squonk ability is good. Smooth and with deep juice wells it helps increase the time between squonks. We like that you can just press your bottle until you see the juice start to pop out the AFC and know you are good to go.
The Serpent BF has some interesting thinking. We aren’t sure it solved a problem that really needed solving. Leaking isn’t a major issue in our books. And the solve has made this atty a little more complicated to use then necessary. The flavour and performance is good, not great, just good. But the cost and availability make up for some of it’s shortcomings. There are tons of spares, and nice hits of Ultem that make it look nice on many mods, so if you go for it, you most likely won’t be too disappointed.
